International orders: block, set a minimum age, or disable age verification by country

Ecommerce sales and market share have soared over the last decade, and especially in the last several years. Companies have changed the way they do business in response to the booming demand by giving their customers the convenience of ordering products online—and in many cases, from anywhere in the world.

AgeChecker.net age verification software complements the goal many ecommerce websites share: to expand their online presence and reach more customers, while also minimizing the risks that come with the territory. These risks include fraud, chargebacks, and regulatory non-compliance factors, all of which tend to increase with your company's scope.

We recognize that ecommerce businesses need leading-edge risk prevention tools that are adaptable enough to comply with changing regulations across different jurisdictions, easy enough to implement, customer-friendly enough to maintain your conversions, yet cost-effective enough to preserve your bottom line.

Designed with that aim, AgeChecker.net offers a variety of risk solutions built into our age verification software. These apply to international orders for age-restricted products such as tobacco, vape, alcohol, etc. If you also sell non-restricted merchandise, easily disable age verification where applicable or block purchases from specific locations. Aside from compliance requirements, verifying customer identity is a strong addition to any risk mitigation or Know Your Customer (KYC) program.

Using location detection technology, AgeChecker.net instantly pinpoints where an order originates. Then it refers to rules you have set for that location to determine how to handle the order. Our rules-based settings for international orders include:

  1. Block all international orders. Any customer ordering from outside the U.S. will be unable to check out.
  2.
  3. Block orders from any number of countries in the world, while accepting orders from others. For instance, many websites have carrier service relationships in certain parts of the world but not others, and adjust this setting accordingly.
  4.
  5. Require a minimum age for all international orders or individual countries. This age can vary from country to country, or be set at one universal requirement. There are two options for your international minimum age policies:

    • Use our age gate. Our popup appears at checkout and informs customers of your minimum age policy for their location. They are prompted to enter date of birth or check a box to self-certify they are of legal age to purchase.
    •
    • Use our full age verification solution. Our popup appears at checkout, prompts date of birth, then requires the customer to submit a valid ID, which is manually verified by our live team. If declined, the customer will be unable to check out. We are equipped to verify government-issued photo IDs from all over the world.
  6. Disable age verification for international orders. Any customer outside the U.S. can check out without a minimum age requirement.
  7.
  8. Upon request, block individual IPs. If you have verifiable records of fraud from a specific IP address, let us know and we will block it on a network-wide basis.

You can use any number of these settings in conjunction. Any location rules you don't specify will default to your global requirement.

AgeChecker.net’s international settings differ from those for the U.S. in that our instant verification method is not available for customers outside the U.S. We are partnered with several of the largest U.S. data providers, which allows us to match customer information against millions of public and proprietary records. For roughly 90% of U.S. orders this yields an instant verification (unless you choose our "Always Require ID" setting).

Not enough trustworthy data exists to automatically verify international customers with the same match rate and accuracy as those in the U.S., so each international customer must submit an ID to be age verified. Manual ID verification occurs in under a minute for each international customer.

How to change your international settings

In addition to custom settings, we offer a variety of industry-specific profiles to automate your minimum age requirements in response to changing laws. You can layer your own rules over any of our profiles, including requirements for international orders. Any rules you don't specify will default to the profile's general settings.

View and edit settings by logging into your AgeChecker.net account.

  1. Under the Websites tab, verify that your General Settings (domain, site name, and notifications email) are correct.
  2.
  3. Use our default popup text or add your own to inform customers of your age policy in the Popup Text box directly below.
  4.
  5. Under Age Settings, choose a Profile from the dropdown menu or select "none" for full customization. Confirm or edit your U.S. settings, then find international settings below. Block, choose a minimum age requirement, or disable age verification for all international orders by adjusting the "Global (U.S. excluded)" setting. Check the Always Require ID box to enforce your age requirements through manual ID checks.
  6.
  7. Use the Add Country button to apply any of these settings to individual countries. Canada and the United Kingdom are listed first for convenience, followed by the rest in alphabetical order.
  8.
  9. Countries you don’t select will default to the global setting you specified above.
  10.
  11. Always remember to Save Settings at the bottom of this page. When you update your settings on AgeChecker.net, changes immediately take effect on your website.
  12.

You can manage multiple websites from the same account dashboard. If you’d like to add a website to your account, simply select Add Website at the top left corner of this page. Submit an installation request under the Install tab for complimentary, same-day setup by our team of developers.

To delete a website from your account, scroll to the bottom of the page and select Delete Website.
